Introduction to the CRREM Foundation
The CRREM Foundation is a non-profit entity founded in 2024, based in the Netherlands (a Dutch “stichting”). It is supported by a network of governing bodies and a small operational team. CRREM’s mission is to increase market transparency by facilitating the global net-zero carbon standard for real estate.
The CRREM Pathways lie at the heart of the CRREM Foundation’s work. These demonstrate how building operational emissions and energy intensities must decrease over time to stay in-line with global climate goals. The CRREM Pathways help market participants track performance, identify risk, and take practical steps to reduce emissions from standing assets.
By enabling better carbon risk assessment, the CRREM Foundation supports greater transparency across markets, more informed capital planning, and stronger dialogue between investors, managers, occupiers and other stakeholders. Its work drives more ambitious, climate action across the real estate sector.
CRREM's journey
CRREM began as a research initiative funded by the EU Horizon 2020 Project grant. This was to develop the first iteration of CRREM Pathways, specific for European countries. It was led by a consortium of universities, with input from key market players.
APG, PGGM, NBIM, and GPIF, joined forces to sponsor the global roll-out of CRREM, recognizing the methodology's value for managing portfolio transition risk.
We are here. The CRREM Foundation was established in 2024 to safeguard public use and scientific integrity of the CRREM Pathways. A new governance structure has been introduced to ensure industry involvement in key decision making.
