What are the CRREM Pathways?

expand_more
The CRREM Pathways are science-based decarbonization pathways for the real estate sector. They translate global carbon budgets derived from IPCC scenarios into property-level emissions and energy intensity targets — covering more than 1,000 pathways across 44 countries and all major property types.

What is the CRREM Misalignment Year?

expand_more
The CRREM Misalignment Year is the projected year when a building's carbon emissions or energy use intensity will exceed its science-based CRREM Pathway. It signals the point at which a building becomes misaligned with Paris Agreement targets — a property-level transition risk indicator.

Is the CRREM data free to use?

expand_more
Yes. The CRREM Pathways, emission factor projections, and all underlying datasets are published open-access on crrem.org. Anyone can download and use them. Software platforms that embed CRREM data commercially require a License Partner agreement.

Why did CRREM rename "Stranding Year"?

expand_more
In July 2025, CRREM replaced "Stranding Year" with "CRREM Misalignment Year" to better reflect what the tool measures: misalignment with climate targets, not a definitive loss of asset value. The underlying methodology is unchanged.

How are the pathways developed and updated?

expand_more
All changes follow a formal governance procedure with three tiers: low-impact maintenance (Secretariat), medium-impact development (Technical Council), and high-impact revision (Technical Council plus Foundation Board). All significant changes undergo stakeholder consultation before adoption.

What is the EUI Methodology Review?

expand_more
The EUI Methodology Review is the first formal review of CRREM's global energy pathways since their initial publication. Led by the Technical Council, it includes a structured market sounding with townhalls and deep-dive sessions. Enhanced guidance is expected later in 2026, subject to public consultation.

Who oversees the CRREM Pathways?

expand_more
The CRREM Technical Council — 13 independent experts from academia, research institutions, and industry — is responsible for the scientific quality and technical oversight of the pathways. The Foundation Board provides strategic oversight and final adoption of high-impact changes.

What happened to the EU-Project Excel Tool?

expand_more
The free Excel-based calculation tool retires on 1 July 2026. CRREM's ecosystem of License Partners now delivers the methodology through integrated platforms. All CRREM Pathways and computation guidance for the CRREM Misalignment Year will continue to be published open-access. Explore the CRREM Library for how to build a calculation tool internally.
